Welcome to Monday’s 30 Days of Homemaking for Girls Giveaway at Homegrown Mom!
Have you heard of the Prairie Primer?
When I first started talking about maybe homeschooling, my sister-in-law, now 25, told me that she remembered her favorite year homeschooling was one when her family did a Little House on the Prairie Unit. She remembered so much about that year, from making butter and corn cob dolls to a balloon out of a hog’s bladder.
Even if I hadn’t already been in love with Laura Ingalls, I would have wanted to do this unit because of how happy she was looking back on that year, more than fifteen years later!
I have been using this year-long unit study with my second grader, Soleil this year. It is intended for grades 3 – 8, but works well for an advanced younger reader, too. My older girl, Coco (14), has joined in on some of the projects, too.
Prairie Primer goes through each of the nine Little House books (the books themselves are not included). You’ll progress through one book per month, doing four days of assignments in every subject.
Prairie Primer covers:
Literature
Bible
History
Science
Language Arts
Some Math
Geography
Art
and my personal favorite… Homemaking!
We purchased some Little House supplemental books recommended by the Primer: The Little House Cookbook, The Little House Sewing Book, My Book of Little House Paper Dolls
and My Little House Crafts Book.
So far this year we’ve made corn cob dolls, johnny cakes, lemonade, butter, and too many things to list here. We’ve also fallen in love with the Ingalls. Many conversations around the dinner table have taken place with Soleil letting Daddy know what the Ingalls had done that day! One of my favorite thing about the Prairie Primer are the corresponding Bible and character questions that come with each day’s reading.
We’ve studied American History, the Presidents, and read several biographies like Louis Braille and Clara Barton. Soleil has learned about plants, various animals, germs, matter, and so much more.
I am in love with this curriculum, and I know you will be too! I bought this curriculum with my own money at the beginning of this school year, and no one paid me for this review 🙂
The author Margie Gray, however, has agreed to send one reader a copy of The Prairie Primer! (Did you read her post today on preparing for hard times? Good stuff!)
If you would like to enter, please leave a comment telling me this: When you were a kid, were you more like Mary, Laura, or (shudder) Nellie? If you don’t know the characters, just tell me why you’d like this!
Hmm.. i think i was like Laura, happy go lucky 🙂 what an awesome prize!!!
I was definitely a Mary as I was a very sensible, helpful, studious and responsible big sister. I do think life would have been loads more fun had I been a Laura. She was quite enchanting I think.
I was more on the studious and quiet side, so I guess I was more like Mary. Thanks for the fun giveaway!
Hmm…I don’t think I was any of those characters. But I will say that Laura was always my favorite. Nellie made me wanna smack her…and Mary was never my favorite from Little House in the Big Woods and she was gloating over her pretty blonde curls.
Laura was and still is my favorite character. I love to watch the series with my children now 🙂
Such an awesome giveaway!
Thanks!
I was a Mary. I was the oldest and was always worried about everything and did not want to get in trouble! My girls love the disney remake of Little House on the Prairie movie! We are homeschooling at it would wonderful to use the Prairie Primer!!
I was a lot like Laura! My childhood was spent outdoors whenever weather permitted…climbing trees, exploring and trying my best to stay or of trouble. I’ve read through the series many times and have just recently finished the “Rose” series with my youngest.
I would love to have this curriculum! I read the whole series when I was a young girl and still have the books. I would love to introduce my daughter to the books this way!
I think I was more like Mary, although I wanted to be more like Laura! She was such a tomboy and liked getting into things. I always wanted to wear dresses like theirs. I even went as far as calling my parents Ma and Pa! I LOVED Little House on the Prairie and I think my children would LOVE this curriculum! Thanks for the offer and the review.
I just found your site this past weekend and love it. I am soo excited about your giveaway. I have been praying about my curriculum choices for next year and this one is one the list! I have been reading aloud the first three books to my little ones and loving it so much that we wanted to do a unit study. I was definitely like Laura. I grew up in the country on a farm with no girls for miles. I was a true tomboy but did like some girly things too!
Laura!!! I loved to explore, play and had a slight mischievous side! I never liked doing what I HAD to do and would rather be off exploring whatever caught my curiosity! *Sigh*…wish I could still do that now, but alas, I am a mommy of three little girls of my own and am now more like Ma…with a closet full of shoes and a Costco membership! 😉 We are using Sonlight core 3 year 1 and this would be a perfect compliment to next years year 2 (U.S. History 1800’s+)! Planned on adding these books to next years curriculum, but had NO idea I could add so much to them and have so much fun!
I’m officially declaring myself the queen of Little House. I was the weirdo who took a pail to school for my lunch, wore my hair in braids and smocked dresses. To this day, I can tell you what episode of Little House it is within 2 seconds AND know the dialogue. Told you I was weird. LOL My husband totally teases me. I always liked Laura the best. Mary always seemed to whiny for me! Although, I did like Mrs. Olsen and Nelly. What great characters. Enter me! Enter me! LOL
My dear friend used this curriculum with her three girls when they were younger and I loved it. At the time I didn’t have a little girl but now that I do, I can’t wait to do this with her! Laura is my favorite! I can relate to her so much.
I feel like my big sister was like Mary and I was more like Laura. We enjoyed the outdoors but my sister loved to spend hours reading while I wanted to be outside playing and carefree. Thankfully, we weren’t like Nellie – but thank the Lord – even Nellie’s can have a changed heart through God’s grace.
Mary…definitely Mary. But, oh, how I wanted to be Laura! I have two sons headed into high school next year and would love to be able to do this year with my 3rd grade daughter. Thanks for highlighting the Primer…I’d never heard of it before.
I was probably most like Laura! Tomboyish and lived on a farm!
I have had my eye on this curriculum for over a year now and am planning on using it when my daughter gets to 2nd or 3rd grade!
We have been listening to the Little House audio books in the car when we travel and even my hubby has been enjoying it!
I definitely think that I was a Mary growing up. I was very serious about my school work and was always really responsible at home. I have always been an avid reader and still read as much as I possibly can to this day!
I always identified with Laura. A daddy’s girl who loved outside and working with her father.
I was definately like Laura! I just love this series of books and now so does my 7 year old daughter. We’d both love to get this Prairie Primer. What a great idea. Thanks for sharing about it and hosting this giveaway!
I was most like Laura . I have always Loved the simplicity of the mid to late 1800’s . The world has gotten so complex that we have forgotten how we got here . I am excited to share such a wonderful thing with my daughter . I have been struggling with a curriculum choice and this would be the icing on the cake !
Thank you for so.much
Andrea
I was more on the Laura side ~ willful, compassionate, and sometimes too impulsive. I’m glad I had parents that could channel my energy! I would love to win this resource!
I think I had some of both Mary and Laura in me. And I read through that series seven times as a girl!
I’d like to win this because I have all the LHOTP books and would like to share them with my boys over the summer or in the Fall – this would be perfect to go alongside it!
I started off like Laura, then grew into Mary. This looks like a fantastic resource!
As a child I was definitely a Laura. My heart was in the right place but I frequently was naughty or got into messes. Sadly as a teen, I was more of a Nelly, a snobby mean girl. I didn’t like Mary until they were older. I thought she was a goody-goody.
I think I was more of a mary, trying to be the good one!
I was a big sister so I was more like Mary. I love the show but have not read the books! It would be wonderful to experience reading them for the first time (and do the study) along with my daughter who will be a 2nd grader next year. Thank you!
I don’t know much about the characters yet… we read Farmer boy the last few weeks (my oldest is a boy (4 years old) so we started with the “boy” one. Now we’re reading the first book about Laura and I’ve never read them before. Already I want all the supplemental books for me! I totally want this primer… have for several months since hearing about them.
Thanks!
I was Laura, but I SO wanted to be able to be Mary.
Hmmm… that’s a tough one. I wasn’t Nellie. I guess I’d have to say I was more like Mary than Laura, but I was definitely not as NOT frustrated as her with my trials.
I’ve looked at this unit study several times now, but have not used it yet. I still have 2 little girls in our homeschool, along with 2 little boys. I think I had better get going on this before they are not so little anymore!
I always admired Laura most, wishing I were more like her, but I think I was more like Mary. I was the oldest of 4 girls, and very much aware of the rules and who was breaking them!
Oh how I would love this! I was just looking at it in a homeschool catalogue yesterday and thinking of putting it on our list for next year.
I think unfortunately I was a combination of Laura and Nellie. :S I was quite bossy and I’m sure came across mean to my friends at times. I’m still a bit bossy but now it’s just considered leadership abilities! 😉
Mary. Big sister. Wanted to be in control. I would love to win your giveaway!
As the oldest of four, I often felt like Mary. As I re-read the stories with my own girls, they often will say, “I am like Mary,” or “I am like Laura!” We really love these books that we can enjoy as a family. We would love to win a copy of the Primer. Thank you!!
Laura with a bit of Mary. I do remember one morning waking up with my eyes all stuck together from pinkeye and thinking I had gone blind-just like Mary. I was TERRIFIED!! Now my girls LOVE Little House. In fact, my oldest daughter (I have 4, plus 4 boys) collects (and reads) older books from the series. She has some of the original books too. We would LOVE to do this Prairie Primer.
Thank you!
I was more like Laura. Mary was not possible as I was just not that good. I hope no one would think I was like Nellie!
I love the Little House series and watched everyone when I was young. My daughter who is 8 loves watching the reruns and we have a lot of conversations about their choices. I was more like Mary, the older sister, always trying to help, fix problems and be the mediator. I would love to do this series w/ my daughter next year for school. Thanks for your constant encouragement!
I was definitely a Laura. This would totally rock our homeschool foundation.
I was most like Laura. I was always getting myself into situations. And now I have a little “Laura” of my own, and she would LOVE to do this. I have two older daughters, one has already graduated and one will soon graduate, and we did the Prairie Primer with them. They still talk about that year as their best year of homeschool. This year my budget for homeschool is tight, and I would LOVE to be able to win this. It would be a blessing.
Thanks,
Cindy
Oh my gosh, my favorite book series show ever!! I read all the books in second grade. I would have to say I was probably a combination of Laura, Mary and NELLIE OLSON! Haha!! I aspired to be Laura, totally the tomboy. In reality, I was probably more like Mary. I was quiet and liked to be around the house. And, my dad owned a small general store so my friends sometimes called me Nellie! Oh, the horrors. My little sister was playing “Little House” one time and thought her hair was too short, so she tied together a bunch of socks and slung them over her head for mock braids. Classic!
What a fantastic study unit.
I created an impromptu book club when I was in 3rd grade where we read LHOTP on our recess breaks. I had received a boxed set of the books from my aunt which still is loved and awaiting indepth study with my daughter. She’s 5 now and I’ve already been searching out resources that I can use as we read through the series.
I was/am more of a Mary. I am the big sister, always wanting to do things right, studious, trying to be helpful.
We would love this!!! Thank you.
What a fun question….I was pretty shy, so I would say I was like Mary. 🙂
When I was younger I loved this series. I could relate more to Laura but being the oldest I had some of the Mary come out in me. Both girls aspired to be like Caroline and I loved the sense Pa gave to family unity. Would love to have this book for my 2 daughters.
I would LOVE this. It is one I have had my eye on. I think I was definitely more like Mary – always the quiet, studious type. Not as much so as Mary, but definitely more her than Laura. My friends were Laura. 🙂 I had a Nellie friend too! 🙂
Kori
I was definitely more like Mary 🙂 Thanks for this giveaway!
I’m the oldest, shy and responsible. I’m sure I had my Nellie moments though.
I always related more to Laura. I loved the books and would love to introduce them to my girls.
I would love to win this! I’m looking forward to teaching a homeschool co-op class on the Little House on the Prairie book next fall. I would love to follow that up in our homeschool with the Prairie Primer unit. My children loved Little House in the Big Woods and it would be fun to work through the series this way. Thank you for the giveaway!
I’d say I was a combo of all three growing up, lol.
what a great giveaway!!!
I was an only child, I aspired to be Laura…..but in reality I was pretty quiet, more of a Mary!
thanks for the chance to win!
I was a lot more like Mary then Laura. My brothers did call me “Pristine Kristine” growing up, cause of my “impressing the parents”, quiet, studious nature, but I’m pretty sure it comes with the territory of being first born (like Mary)
