Last week at our church Bible study, our Pastor spoke this verse, and how the Word of God is a living thing. Afterwards, he asked us all how God’s Word had come alive for us during the study, and some people shared.
The very next day Soleil chose a devotional for us to read. She brought the book to me, and barely glancing at it, I said, “Let me finish up here, and we’ll read it.” I was in no position to read to her at the moment. I’ll spare you the details, but I will tell you that my kids have some boundary issues. And that I’m considering getting a lock on my bathroom door. Anyway, a minute later, when I went to find her, she had already read it.
“Mom, it was really cool!”
“Tell me about it.”
“Well, it was like how God’s word is a prize, you know? Like how we find a prize in a cereal box and how we can search through the Bible and find prizes in God’s word.”
“Oh, cool!” And it was cool. In fact, it was so cool that she wanted to read it again, this time out loud to me. I looked down and saw the verse that went with the devotion and it was Hebrews 4:12. Don’t you love when God does that? I reminded her that we had just talked about that verse the night before, when she had been coloring at my feet. She remembered everyone talking about what they “got out of the Bible,” and she thought it was pretty cool that her Bible had the same stuff in it.
Since that day, I’ve made it a point to ask her what part of what we’ve read has come alive for her, and she has some really interesting answers. We read a devotion based on Psalm 139:5 about how God is always with us and we can’t run away from Him. I asked her what came alive to her and she said that it made her feel good to think about God always being with her, and related it to times when she is scared.
Not that she’s always so open. For instance, today, we were reading about Joseph and his brothers and she shook her head and said, “Wow. I really needed to hear that today. God knew,” she smiled. I didn’t pry, and she didn’t offer up any more information.
But that’s Ok. God knows.
Have you asked your kids how God’s Word has come alive for them today? It never would have occurred to me to ask that if it wasn’t for my pastor {Greg Eckler} asking us, so I thought I’d pass it on. Try it, you’ll be blessed!
