It’s not often that I do book reviews on my blog, but Total Family Makeover by Melissa Spoelstra is something I think all parents should read. The publisher is also offering a Family Fun Night Giveaway, so it’s the perfect time to share this with you.
Total Family Makeover gives parents practical hands-on advice for implementing Proverbs 22:6. How many times have you read this and wondered if you’re training your children correctly?
Train children in the way they should go; when they grow old, they won’t depart from it. ~Proverbs 22:6
Whenever I am checking out a Non-fiction book to read, the first thing I do is read the Table of Contents. Before I read the back copy, or description, or anything else, I want to know what topics are going to be covered.
When I read the Table of Contents for Total Family Makeover by Melissa Spolestra, I knew I had to read this book! The introduction alone caught my interest with the title, Your Kids are Not Your Report Card.
The chapters had informational titles that tell exactly what the reader will be learning, and I got excited to read about what Spoelstra calls the 8 Habits of Growth.
Spoelstra uses personal stories in an I’ve been there style to share nuggets of wisdom she’s learned through raising her own children. She comes across as authentic and relatable, something I especially appreciate when reading a parenting book.
In addition to real life experiences, each chapter contains thoughtful teaching based on scripture with plenty of thinking questions to help the reader gain insight, and practical, applicable steps. There are also discussion questions at the end of each chapter if you want to read this with a group.
I enjoyed and highlighted this book so much that I am going to now re-read through it with my husband and have a weekly date to discuss the content. We have been Christian parents for years and only have our 13 year old daughter left at home, but we’re all entering a new phase of life (her as a teen, and only child at home, us as parents of a new teen and new grandparents, too.) I think it’s a perfect time to reevaluate our methods and be inspired to disciple our daughter.
If you’re struggling with fulfilling Proverbs 22:6, or you’re feeling like you’re in a parenting rut, or a new phase of parenting, I highly recommend this book for you. If you’re on the fence about reading it, consider this statement from the back cover:
